How to add film grain to a photo
WarmFilmLab adds simulated film grain to an existing photo with a slider from 0 to 65. Choose a preset, adjust the grain, compare the original and export a PNG. Your selected photo stays in browser memory.

- Choose a photo and preset. Select a JPG, PNG or WebP up to 15 MB. A preset sets the color treatment as well as its starting grain and fading values.
- Move Film grain. A value of 0 removes the added grain. Raise the value gradually while checking smooth areas and faces. The slider values are settings in this tool, not film ISO or percentages.
- Adjust Fading separately. Grain changes texture. Fading blends the photo toward the preset’s tint and softens its tonal appearance. Lower fading if the image looks too washed out.
- Compare, then export. View original removes the filter for comparison but keeps your crop and border. Return to View edited and download the PNG. Inspect the downloaded image at the size where you plan to share it.
Start with a preset, then tune the texture
| Preset | Grain | Fading |
|---|---|---|
| Summer ’86 | 24 | 18 |
| After hours | 32 | 7 |
| Family album | 19 | 32 |
Changing presets resets both sliders to these defaults. The grain range is 0–65 and the fading range is 0–60. These numbers are starting points, not recommendations for every photo. For a lighter texture, lower grain from the preset’s default and compare before increasing it.
Film grain, digital noise and fading
The editor adds a simulated texture; it does not scan or identify real film grain. It is a creative treatment, not a denoising or restoration tool. If your source already contains visible digital noise, additional grain can make its texture busier rather than repair it.
Grain alone does not change hairstyles, clothing or the scene. For a different scene, use the 1980s prompt guide with an external image tool. WarmFilmLab itself does not perform image generation.
Why does grain look different after downloading?
The preview is fitted to your screen; the PNG contains the working pixels. A small preview can hide fine texture. Compare the export at its intended display size before deciding that more grain is needed. Large source photos are resized to a maximum 1600-pixel edge before cropping, and a selected border adds pixels. The download label shows the export dimensions.
You can export without a watermark or account. Processing is local, and the original photo is not overwritten. Reloading clears the selected photo and edits.
